How to Prepare Kitchen Cabinets for Painting

Start by removing cupboard doors, drawer fronts, handles and hinges where possible. Kitchen cabinets can accumulate grease and dirt, so thoroughly clean the surfaces using sugar soap or a suitable degreaser.
Once dry, lightly sand the cabinets using approximately 180–240 grit sandpaper. You do not normally need to remove all the existing paint or finish — the aim is to remove the shine and create a surface that your primer can bond to.
